Meet Our People - Amanda Riekstina, Software Engineer

Jan. 17, 2024 -

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us, Amanda. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you it led you to Datapath?

I’m originally from Latvia but moved to England in 2009 when I started Secondary school. I then went on to study Computer Science in Leicester, and after graduating I got my first job as a front-end web developer. It was quite a small company where I got to work closely with the senior devs, so I managed to gain quite a wide array of knowledge on different technologies.

After a year there, I started looking for other places to work as I wanted to change locations. Datapath suited what I was looking for and was very happy when I got accepted into the Junior Software Engineer role. I’ve been here for two years and received a promotion to Software Engineer not too long ago.

In the time that I’ve worked here my technical knowledge has grown exponentially with the amazing support of all my colleagues, and it continues to grow.

What does a normal day look like for a Software Engineer at Datapath?

I typically start the day quite early – especially if I’m in the office – smash out a few hours of work before the morning meeting, where we discuss what we have done and what we will do for the rest of the day; potentially bring up any worries or quick questions. Then the rest of the day we just crack on with work with the occasional chat to my co-workers about work related stuff.

What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your role?

The constant learning and improving is something that I’ve always wanted in a career, which is why I chose software development. Working at Datapath especially allows me to do so as there’s so many different technologies that we work on a day-to-day basis.

What can be challenging sometimes is finding solutions to extra tricky bugs; it can be frustrating when you’re struggling to make progress, but your colleagues are always happy to help and when you finally find the answer to the bug it feels very rewarding.

How do you like to spend your time away from the office?

I go bouldering a few times a week and a lot of my weekends are generally spent away from home as I like visiting friends/family who live all over England; normally my cats would come with me, so the car journey is always an experience.

I also do a lot of cooking and I’m quite crafty; I’ve helped a few friends with their sowing emergencies.

Tell us something people may not know about you…

I enjoy going to music events, my cats are harness trained, and I’m fluent in Latvian and English – I also know some Russian.
